Splashes of Color: Chocolate Brown

Okay, I know what you’re thinking. I mean, is brown really considered a “splash of color”?

Maybe not. But I wanted to do it anyway because chocolate brown is my absolutely favorite color to use in our home, and I wanted to see what I could find.

What I realized is that what makes brown so wonderful is that it can be a splash of color itself (in an otherwise light-toned room) or serve as the perfect backdrop to make other colors stand out in a more dramatic way.

I’m not the only one who feels this way. Jonathan Adler shares 15 Fabulous Design Tips on MetHome, and 2 of them revolve around browns:

“Chocolate brown and baby blue are perfect together. They’re uptown, they’re downtown, they’re classic and fashion forward.”

“Let go of coordinating colors. Colors can’t clash. However, when in doubt - brown is your foundation. Brown with red is innately chic.”

I love how airy and light this room feels. Not necessarily words you’d associate with brown, but I think they pulled it off!

It’s also a cozy and warm color, and I love how this room blends a more traditional leather couch with so many modern touches.

Okay, a lot of this room is brown, but what really caught my attention was the brown zebra print stool/seat. You already know I like things that are subtly funky, and that pretty much defines it for me!

I love how this gorgeous brown vase highlights the colors in the roses.

And this wreath is so very elegant and inviting!

Our home is very modern/minimalist, with lots of white throughout. However, I love our chocolate brown floor, and we love to accessorize with chocolate brown pillows, vases and accessories.

What about you? Do you use chocolate brown in your home?

We recently changed around our office and bedroom which are adjacent to accommodate a new creative space for me (I am so lucky). The office became my creative space. It’s beautiful milk chocolate brown but I didn’t want in my creative area. I painted it white as I mostly scrapbook and I like my supplies out and I felt the white would be better. My husband a few Christmases ago got me a red (absolute favorite color) chaise but it really looked bad with the dark purple of our bedroom so I painted our bedroom the milk chocolate brown and it looks gorgeous! Even my husband was happy to have the brown back. The room seems alive but soothing. We need to find a new bed, we both like and some new asian inspired (with the red and brown) bedding but it is already a wonderful room. So cool to find out I am being innately chic! : )

I love brown with touches of blue and tan/off white. Our master bedroom is done in those colors. I hope to do our living room in similar colors soon!

I agree with you. I love chocolate brown - and even in clothes. It is very hard to find though. I don’t like dull brown - that is boring. That kitchen is very beautiful.

I love chocolate brown too. I have a chocolate brown accent wall in my living room with three pieces of bright orange, yellow, and red artwork on it, and it really looks awesome. Everyone comments on how it makes the place feel spacious and cozy at the same time.

I LOVE brown in decorating. Last year we took our boring powder room and painted it a dark chocolate brown. We added some inexepensive nickel-type fixtures/mirror and added red towels. A $25 rug from Pier One pulled it all together and this summer we found a piece of artwork that completed the room for only $80. It is now easily my favorite room in the house and we always get compliments on it! So rich and a totally affordable makeover!

I really want to paint our living room in chocolate brown. However I can’t find nice milk chocolate like brown. Can any one tell me what is the name of brown color you have used and its brand?

Thank you.
Olena
