Last week we looked at using lime green to add a splash of color to our homes. This week, I want to talk about a color that often ignites strong feelings in designers and homeowners alike: chili pepper red. There’s no doubt that red is a color of passion, and it also has passionate supporters and haters!
The thing is, when we’re talking about red, you might automatically think of a room like the one above, which is really a red room. Obviously this style works for certain people in certain homes, but this series is about splashes of color, adding little touches of color to our homes.
It could mean a couple of red flowers in a vase on your kitchen table or counter.
Or red sheets and pillows in an otherwise neutral bedroom.
It could even mean blending touches of chili pepper red in with other colors so that it adds to the warmth of the room without necessarily being the centerpiece.
Of course, it’s okay to go bold too. This kitchen isn’t really my personal style, but I think it is so bright and cheery and fun!
And if you’re vehemently opposed to red in your house, you could always save it for the front porch.
Or just pull it out for the holidays!
Do you have any chili pepper red accents in your home? How do you feel about red?
Next week we’ll be talking about lavender. I wanted to give you a heads up so you could take pictures and share them (either a link to the picture or to a blog post about it!) with us in the comments then.

We have a red nook in our bedroom that’s painted chili pepper red. It’s one of my favorite things about the whole apartment! What’s great about it is that when you first walk into the room you can’t see it, and the vaulted ceilings make the walls a great canvas for neutral colors that aren’t overwhelming. But then as you move into the room you catch a glimpse of a smaller space in a color that knocks your socks off!
I LOVE red it is everywhere is my house. I find it relaxing and energizing depending on its shade and I love to see it. I have told my girlfriends however if I go to far let me know!
So far no one has said anything yet. : ) I think this is what a home should be, your personal style and so fill it with the colors you love. And I want that chandelier!…….now to find a spot for it.
Thanks for some more red inspiration!
Oh I’m a sucker for red! Before we moved to this rental I had our front bathroom painted in a cherry red with black cabinetry and gorgeous white handles. Oh I miss that bathroom!
I am loving this series, thanks Mandi!
I’m drawn to red, but have little of it in my house. I’m not a natural decorator, so I tend to be afraid of making mistakes. Thanks for the pictures. They are inspiring.
I have red everywhere in my house, too! My couches are red, my curtains are red, my seat cushions are red. My kitchen used to be red, but that proved too dark, so now it’s a bright golden yellow. With red accents, of course.
I think my favorite picture you posted is the first one. Humorously, my dining room is a similar color to that picture. I LOVE that red chandelier and when I finally get my dining room back (it’s currently a play room) I’m going to have to incorporate that idea somehow. I love red when it pops, so while I have a lot of red, it’s backdropped by mostly white, yellow and black.
Thanks for posting great pictures!
I am a huge fan of decorating with color, so I am loving your Splashes of Color series! A pop of color is such a great way to give a high impact look for a small amount of money and effort.
I posted on my blog 3 cheap ways that I have used splashes of red in our home:

Thanks for all the great ideas, keep them coming!
