I was searching design sites for silver accessories for a Splashes of Color post when I came across an article at Real Simple called “Simple, Practical Uses for Silver.” I loved these ideas so much that I wanted to share them with you, and it also got me thinking about other ways to incorporate family heirlooms and antiques — as well as pieces like china and crystal that may not be used every day — into our home decor.

I’ve seen china hung on the wall in dining rooms, kitchens and even bedrooms as beautiful wall art. And a crystal vase or tray can be used to add an element of surprise and sophistication to casual kitchens and bathrooms. You could also frame silverware in an open frame or make candles out of old tea cups.

Do you have any heirlooms or antiques displated in your home in unique ways rather than stored in a cabinet where they’re unused and unappreciated?

Mandi,
I like the idea of the tea cups as candles I’m going to do that with some of my grandmas old mismatched tea cups. I have some of my grandmas china on display on a built-in in our living room. We use it when we have company too.

Yes, using old tea cups as candly holders is a really lovely idea!
It would make a great, unique Christmas present!
Thanks for posting!

I recently gave away a couple tea sets that I had. It wasn’t my style and I wasnt really using it anymore. I wish I knew about the candle idea then! :)

The candle in the teacup thing is beautiful, but you have to be careful. Some of those really old thin china cups can’t take the heat when the flame gets low enough to really heat them up, and they will break. Just be careful!
